The Ordubad lemon — a marvel of indoor gardening
A lemon grown on the shushaband, pollinated by hand, two years in the ripening — why it has no equal in the world.
The Ordubad lemon has a tradition rare in the world: it grows not in the orchard but in the home. In Ordubad, where winters are harsh, the lemon tree is kept in a pot on the shushaband — the home's sunny glazed veranda. Each tree is cared for like a member of the family; some trees are more than 100 years old and are passed down from generation to generation.
The lemon is pollinated by hand, its fruit stays on the tree for 9–12 months, and it takes nearly two years to ripen fully. That is why the Ordubad lemon is large and thin-skinned, its peel is not bitter, and its scent is many times stronger than that of an ordinary lemon. A tree yields 20–40 fruits a year — which is why it is so prized.
A slice of Ordubad lemon in Ordubad tea — this is how the town welcomes its guests. The lemon jam and dried lemon slices in our chests are made precisely from the shushaband lemon.
