Çillə
After the longest night, the days grow longer — a table laid on the darkest night of the year.
Çillə — from the word «çehel», meaning forty. Great Çillə begins on 21 December and lasts forty days, followed by Little Çillə and the Grey Month. Çillə night is the longest night of the year — it is the custom to spend it together, without sleeping.
On 21 December the sun sets early in Ordubad and the longest night of the year begins. The elders call this night Çillə: «chehel» means forty. The hardest stretch of winter is counted in three steps — Great Çillə, Little Çillə and the Grey Month — and each step has its own table.
No one is left alone that night. A table is laid by the fireplace: the watermelon hidden in straw since autumn is brought out and cut, pomegranates are seeded, and from the niche come qakh, walnuts and a saucer of jam. The elder gives the first slice of watermelon to the youngest: «Those who spend this night together will see the winter through together».
The Çillə chest is a small likeness of that table. It is given at the close of the year to those who have come through a difficult time together. When the lid opens, inside is the sweetness of the long night — and the promise of the light that follows.
