Nübar
Nübar is not sold, it is shared — the first plate the gardener takes to his neighbour.
Nübar — from the words «nou» (new) and «bar» (fruit): the first fruit of the season to ripen. In Ordubad the honour lies not in tasting the first harvest but in sharing it. «Nübar olsun» — to this day, it is the blessing said to someone doing something for the first time.
In the last week of May the mornings in Ordubad's upper orchards are still cool, but the mulberry trees have begun to turn white. Just as he learnt from his grandmother, the gardener spreads a white cloth beneath the tree and gently shakes the branch — not by hand, but with a long pole. Whatever is ripe falls by itself. A mulberry that hits the ground does not count as nübar — nübar is only what falls onto the cloth.
The first plate brought home that morning is never sold. One share goes to the elder of the house, one to the next-door neighbour, and one to a guest passing by that day. When the door is knocked, only two words are spoken: «Nübar gətirmişəm» — «I've brought the first fruits». The one who tastes it closes their eyes and makes a wish, then says «may the year's harvest be plentiful».
The Nübar chest continues that plate. Everything inside is the orchard's first word: fresh, simple, sincere. This box is not meant to look expensive, but to be first — a gift for a first meeting, a first working day, a first contract.
