Mücrü
The lock is fastened not with iron, but with a word — a chest whose lock never worked, yet no one ever opened it.
Mücrü is a small decorated chest in which jewellery, seals and letters are kept. In the Ordubad home it stands at the very top of the niche, and its key is kept by the head of the house. When a girl married, the mücrü was the first thing packed in her dowry.
In the old Ordubad home every bride had her own mücrü — a small walnut chest, its lid decorated with mother-of-pearl, sometimes with inlay. It held more memories than jewels: a ring left by her mother, a first letter, her father's seal, her grandmother's prayer paper.
The curious thing is that the mücrü's lock often did not work. Even so, no one would touch it without permission. For the mücrü was a symbol not of what was kept safe, but of trust: in this house a lock is fastened not with iron, but with a word. The people of Ordubad simply called it «the memory of the home».
The Mücrü chest carries this trust. Its eight compartments hold eight delicacies, but the real content lies not in the compartments but in the giver's intention: the relationship between us is a value we keep in a chest.
