Şahnişin
The highest seat belongs to the guest — the corner where light through the lattice casts its pattern.
Şahnişin — from «şah» and «nişin» (seated): the place where the shah sits. In the Ordubad home of the XVIII–XIX centuries, it is the corner of the room that projects towards the street, with a latticed window. By seating his dearest guest there, the host said without a word: «in this house, you are the highest».
In the old Ordubad home the most honoured place was up high: the shahnishin. The corner of the room jutting out towards the street, with a lattice-covered window; the place where the morning sun fell first. The head of the house sat there. But when a guest arrived, the elder would rise and give up his seat — sitting in the shahnishin was not a rank, it was a mark of respect.
The light falling through the lattice cast a geometric pattern on the floor; the people of Ordubad used to say that the sun falls in patterns on the face of whoever drinks tea in the shahnishin. The things in this corner were different too: the best glass, the best jam, the best words. After a guest had left, the shahnishin would stay empty for a while.
The Şahnişin chest is that very corner: spacious, single-layered, with a lattice window in the corner of the lid. For an executive, a guest, for protocol — for the person the host invites to «come up to the place of honour».
