Süfrə
«Süfrə açın» («Lay the table») — the first words spoken after the greeting in an Ordubad home.
Süfrə — a spread laid out for guests, showing the abundance of the home. In an Azerbaijani home the Süfrə is not food, but an unspoken sentence: «you have come to this house, and this house is with you». Not taking a share from the table is considered impolite, and the abundance of the table is regarded as the good name of the home.
When a guest comes to an Ordubad home, the first words heard after the greeting are «lay the table». No one asks whether the guest is hungry — a cup of tea arrives, and with it qakh, walnuts and a saucer of jam.
A Süfrə is not food, but an unspoken sentence: «you have come to this house, and this house is with you». Leaving a Süfrə without taking a share is considered impolite; and the abundance of the table is the good name of the home.
The Süfrə box is that very saucer — addressed to the home. An addition to the festive table, a gift for guests, a companion to a cup of tea. Separate from the corporate collection, for one family: six or nine compartments, with dried fruit and nuts from the Ordubad orchard.
