Sərşəhər
Abundance does not diminish when shared — a neighbourhood table laid beneath the plane tree.
Sərşəhər — «sər» (head) and «şəhər» (town): the town's head quarter. It is one of Ordubad's five historic quarters — alongside Anbaras, Kurdatal, Mingis and Uchturlanga. It lies highest of all, on the side that opens onto the orchards.
Ordubad has five old quarters, and each once had its own mosque, its own spring, its own plane tree and its own table. Sərşəhər is the highest of them, the quarter that opens onto the orchards. It is said that water coming down from the mountain passes through here first, and only then is shared out to the lower quarters through the kahrizes — which is why in Sərşəhər people learn to share before anyone else.
A wedding, a holiday, a memorial feast — it makes no difference: a long table is laid beneath the plane tree, and every house brings a plate. This table has an unwritten rule: no one eats from their own plate. Your share belongs to your neighbour, and your neighbour's share to you. The elder sits at the head of the table, but he too receives the same share as everyone else.
The Sərşəhər chest is a small likeness of the neighbourhood table. Its ten compartments are ten shares — for a team, a board of directors, a department. An equal share for all, equal respect for all.
